The Casino Effect in UI/UX Design

It’s no secret that the job of UI/UX designers is to craft products that retain customers coming back to the casino or gambling app.

There is a simple but effective strategy for engaging consumers and increasing their desire to return to your product. Something that will bring them back even if they’ve been away for a while.

The Casino Effect

This phenomenon is a mixture of numerous psychological effects that occur simultaneously in the human brain. However most notably in the context of a casino hence that particular name.

The potency of this impact is driven by a combination of reciprocity, engagement, consistency, loss aversion, restriction, and social proof.

Here we see how it works and how it can be used.

Give a user something valuable just for registering (reciprocity)

Inquire about the items that the user enjoys and desires (engagement & consistency)

Give it to them for free for a while. Then inform them that if they don’t want it any longer, it will actually be deleted (loss aversion).

Make a one-of-a-kind, limited-time offer specifically for them (restriction)

Show the user how many people have used or will use your goods (social proof)

This design is used by plenty of apps including TikTok, LinkIn and Netflix to name but a few.

Is the Casino Effect ethical?

It’s important to remember that the casino effect is named that way because it resembles the casino. It is not necessarily about the gambling that takes place inside the casino. If you wish to know about online casinos, click here!

Casinos excel at a number of things, including:

To encourage continual play, they provide their guests a variety of stuff for free or on the house.

When you acquire your chips, they take down your name, personal information, and other useful data during check-in.

They occasionally give away free chips to get you started.

After you’ve been a few times, they’ll usually offer you a personalized deal with an expiry date.

They will nearly always treat you differently if you are a premium or platinum member. For example bottle service or a complimentary buffet, etc. They will then remind you that you must renew your subscription or your privileges will be lost.

They put you in groups with other people who are also playing and winning the games you’re playing.

All of these are designed to do one thing and that is to get you hooked.

You become used to a certain level of experience, and then you are told that unless you act soon, you will lose it.

Almost everyone will do whatever it takes to keep the dopamine flowing, including parting with a significant sum of money. This is because we make decisions emotionally and then explain them with logic; not the other way around.

The Casino Effect’s ethical implications

As UI/UX designers, the most pressing question is: how ethical is the casino effect? Is it possible to craft a user interface for a casino application  without causing harm?

The solution isn’t as straightforward as one would hope.  To be honest, any use of casino effect is definitely not completely legit. But there is one thing that casinos don’t do that you can do to make it far more ethical.

To be honest, any use of casino effect is definitely not completely legit. But there is one thing that casinos don’t do that you can do to make it far more ethical.

Make the exits prominent.

The majority of casinos conceal the exits on purpose. They don’t have clocks on the walls, and they offer free food, beverages, and vouchers to encourage guests to remain as long as possible.

There are a couple of things that must be done in order to craft the casino effect ethically.

Make the exits visible and easy to find.

Make the cancellation procedure as straightforward as possible.

These enable the user to exit a situation that they do not want to be in.

They allow the user to go back and change their mind if they don’t like it or it doesn’t work for them.

Steve Huxley, a Liverpudlian and long-time Barcelona resident, launched the Barcelona Brewing Company in 1993. He introduced the city to craft beer, but it was Judit Cartex, who helped establish Barcelona as Spain’s craft beer capital. She is just one of many women who are driving the beer scene there right now.

Beer has always been a part of her life. She grew up poor without even drinking  Coca-Cola. Sundays were a special treat when her mother and grandmother would crack open a litre bottle of beer in front of the TV to watch football.

Cartex learned her profession from Huxley and then established her own brewery. Steve opened her eyes to the possibilities of craft beer, not just in Barcelona but in the rest of Spain.

Covadonga Garca Pérez, 24, is another female brewers working in this traditionally male sector. She believes it’s a vocation rather than a job.

She brews at La Textil, a chic new brewpub in central Barcelona that also has a restaurant and music venue.

Cristina Fernández Romero works at Espiga, a brewery just outside of the city. She has recently worked with Garca Pérez at La Textil for a collaborative brewing project. Punto Violeta is the name of the beer, which is inspired by an initiative to offer secure public spaces for harassed women. The aim of the project is to show that women are embraced in the brewing world with open arms.

The two relocated in Barcelona from Asturias and Madrid, respectively. Whilst there are scenes all over Spain Barcelona is where there are most opportunities.

According to Fernández Romero, she developed an interest in brewing during her Erasmus year in the Czech Republic. She was stunned by the variety of beers available.

Fernández Romero was astounded that you could produce so many different varieties of beer with the same ingredients.

Quinia Pujol who is located a hundred miles from Barcelona, has taken things a step further. She produces beer with barley and hops she harvests on her farm in Almacelles.

Pujol just wanted to make beer that she wanted to drink. Everything she needed to brew is grown right there on her farm. She claimes to have the only such beer farm in Spain, and probably Europe.

About half of Pujol’s Lo Vilot beer is sold to bars in Barcelona. She doesn’t think women necessarily make different or better beer but believes men don’t want to acknowledge they don’t know something. Women, however, aren’t scared to ask questions and may end up learning more.

When it comes to misogyny, Cartex is typically frank. She has worked in construction, plays football, rides a motorcycle, and was a rock band drummer. These are all very macho worlds but adds that she has never  had an issue being a woman in the craft beer scene. She admits that she refuses to take any nonsense from anyone however.  For younger women entering the scene she admits it might not be the same.

Men, on the other hand, are happy to see more women in the industry, according to the young brewers who collaborate at La Textil.

While the craft brewing sector faced significant obstacles in 2021 due to labor and material shortages, many craft breweries were able to survive the storm. Despite the fact that taprooms, bars, and restaurants reopened last year, breweries continued to rely on distribution for additional revenue. This pattern began in 2020 when breweries had to sell directly to consumers through various channels due to COVID-19 regulations. 2022 should see improvement for the craft industry.

Despite the fact that many COVID restrictions have been loosened, craft brewers continue to embrace this additional money stream.

The diversity of craft beer consumers and producers is a wide and promising trend for 2022.

But it wasn’t all good news and progress in 2021.

In 2021, the brewing sector was impacted by severe weather occurrences, climate change, and manpower and manufacturing shortages. Barley production in the United States was down 31% from 2020. This made it the weakest crop harvest since 1934.

The future of hops may also be in peril, as the record heat in 2021 severely affected first-year plants.

Liquor producers are actively working to eliminate tax burdens that would make hard beverages more competitive in the marketplace.

Finally, the largest aluminum can manufacturer in the United States announced a fivefold increase in their minimum order demand.

In the craft beer market, two broad trends are expected to emerge this year.

For starters, there may be more collaboration and development of cannabis beers. Secondly, as the blockchain proves its worth and receives broader acceptance among customers and brewers, unique marketing ideas and potential revenue sources for the beer sector will continue to emerge.

The concept of cannabis-infused beverages isn’t really new in states like Colorado. Recreational cannabis has been legal there for over a decade but we can expect more investment in cannabis brews this year. CBD or THC-infused cannabis beverages are both possible.

The founder of Blue Moon established CERIA, a nonalcoholic beer brand that also sells cannabis-infused goods in 2018. Molson Coors also announced additional investment in a CBD beverage line, Veryvell, in early 2021. CERIA was Colorado’s first THC-infused, nonalcoholic craft beer.   THC-infused beer has to be nonalcoholic due to regulatory limitations.

Cannabis brewing requires more regulatory compliance than generally required for normal beer. However it shouldn’t discourage brewers from participating in the multibillion-dollar booming business.

Craft breweries are embracing blockchain technology in 2022.

The blockchain which means investment and millions of dollars for some and confusion for others, is here to stay. It has now also begun to make its way into the world of beer. The blockchain is a decentralized ledger that enables transparency and allows validations of transactions in a public rather than private context. Blockchain technology underpins and supports cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Last year, the blockchain made its debut in the beer industry using nonfungible tokens (NFTs). NFTs are one-of-a-kind digital assets frequently utilized to sell digital art. NFTs can also be used as a token, letting the owner gain access to a private community or get particular perks.

In 2021, at least three breweries jumped headfirst into the NFT industry, each with their own strategy. Denver Beer Co. released an NFT, which it auctioned online for 4.33 ETH ($16,000). This is a direct sale in which the NFT holder can redeem up to four drinks per day at any of  their taprooms. Alternate Ending Beer Co advertidse its new grisette beer by licensing a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT. This has the potential to bring in a whole new group of people who may not have previously been involved in or interested in the craft beer sector.

Blockchain has almost unlimited opportunities for innovation both inside and beyond the craft beer business.

Other craft brewers, as well as the entire beer business, expect to expand in 2022 on the excellent work done in the previous year

There will be challenges ahead due to ongoing labor shortages, a lack of materials and supplies. Not to mention the unknowns surrounding COVID and the crisis in Ukraine. The brewing community has always demonstrated its resiliency in the face of adversity however. It has an ability to capture the hearts and minds of millions through its creativity. We should expect more traditional market expansions and contractions, but we’re optimistic about the craft industry’s future as it collaborates with others.

Sculpting and metalworking, as well as knitting and printing, are both examples of crafts. Textile, decorative, paper, practical, and fashion crafts are the five primary types. They are crafts based on their form and function.

Textile crafts

Any sort of craft that involves fabrics, yarn, or design on a surface falls under this category. Knitting, quilting, embroidery, weaving, and dying are examples as Because the end products are frequently sold as sweaters or wall hangings. Many of these might clearly be classified as decorative or fashion crafts. They are, nevertheless, technically textile crafts because they all begin with fabric.

The Japanese art of boro, a type of ornamental repair that involves combining materials from several sources, is another example of textile crafts. Sashiko is a type of decorative stitching popular in Japan.

Paper crafts

Paper crafts, as expected by the name, involve some kind of creative design on paper. A lot of children’s first exposure to paper crafts is in nursery or preschool. For example when they hand print designs on paper with potatoes halves. Wood and linoleum engraving is the developed equivalent of this. Papier-mache, calligraphy, and papermaking are examples of other paper crafts.

Decorative crafts

Types of decorative crafts include furniture construction, metalworking, stenciling, stained glass, gilding, spongeware, and basket weaving. Toy manufacturing and other arts where the final product is a piece of decor also fall into this category. Decorative art, unlike fine art, usually has a practical element to it. For example, a piece of furniture may be considered as attractive in its own right however its main purpose is obvioulsy to provide a place to sit.

A current trend is to combine furniture-making with metalwork. Furniture made of wood with metalwork legs is frequently featured in arts and crafts and home décor magazines. The metalwork is primarily industrial in appearance, but it also consists of a significant level of beautiful workmanship.

Fashion crafts

This discipline includes all aspects of dressing the human body, including jewelry, headwear, leatherwork (shoes, belts, and handbags), and clothing. Jewelry can be manufactured with metalworking and clothing can be made with sewing. Both of these are textile crafts but can easily interact with other craft categories.

Soft fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool, as well as harder materials like nylon, canvas, and leather, are used in fashion crafts. Sewing is only one aspect of the garment-making process. Clothing design and construction is a multi-step practice that necessitates precision technique and meticulous attention to detail.

Functional crafts

Many of the other sorts of crafts can be defined as functional as well. Decorative pottery, such as serving platters and utensils for example. These are frequently constructed with materials that are safe to eat from. Many furniture crafts are utilitarian first and foremost, but they can still also be very attractive.

Obviously, having usefulness built into your art or craft is beneficial to attracting the largest potential customer base. Some customers may not usually pay top dollar for an original item solely for its appearance. However they might rationalize the cost if the product can be used in everyday life.

According to a recent analysis from the University of Creative Arts, the economic power of the UK’s craft economy sector might help local communities survive and thrive. UCA’s research on the UK’s craft industry has revealed both economic growth and an increase in online opportunities, as well as shortcomings in producer support.

In addition to creating local revenue and employment, the sector, according to UCA, might foster community cohesiveness.

It may also help to fill vacant shop spaces during this period of uncertainty.

The survey looked at producers in Farnham and the surrounding Surrey Hills, an area recognized for its thriving craft scene. The World Crafts Council proclaimed it a World Craft City in August. This makes it the first town in the United Kingdom to receive this accolade.

According to UCA’s research, the craft-based economy generates £50 million per year in Farnham alone.

Textiles, ceramics, and glass blowing are a few examples of work in the craft industry.

It’s an industry that’s growing at a breakneck pace.

According to estimates from the Crafts Council, it was worth over £3 billion in the UK in 2019. A figure up from £883 million in 2006.

On a more local level, the UCA survey found that over a third of makers in Farnham support themselves solely via their work. This compares to 21% of workers in other industries who have to supplement their earnings.

The findings demonstrate how the artisan economy is frequently overlooked.

According to the survey, 31.6 million individuals in the UK are now craft consumers.

Consumers purchased 24.6 million products in 2020 alone, at an average price of £124.

When used properly, the craft industry can help the economy of a community survive and thrive. It provides money to individuals, businesses, and regions as well as enabling vital social and cultural cohesiveness.

While the report is based on a specific locality, the case study, according to UCA, might be used to model various areas across the UK.

While the report’s economic conclusions are generally good, it suggest that local communities must create a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for creators.

This would also incentivize craft students to stay and work in the area, according to the UCA.

Affordable living and working spaces, retail options, maker and buyer networks, and access to professional development are some of the solutions.

To maintain its current rate of growth, the industry must catch up with transforming retail trends, according to the report.

For example, the number of online craft purchases increased from 5% in 2006 to 33% in 2020. Around half of those polled said they had sold products overseas in the previous year. Many owed this to the proliferation of online selling platforms.

According to the report, social media has given producers instant connectivity. This has made them an essential and developing element of a maker’s growing portfolio.

However, over a third of all manufactures do not have a website to engage with these customers, according to the study. Craft experts should be provided additional support to help them participate with the digital market.

Knitting, once a pastime for the elderly now seems to attracting a new audience in millennials with a passion for craft. For many it is a productive way to spend their free time. It’s a creative craft for self-expression, similar to hair, skin, and clothing.

Girls are the new “sewists” as sewing enthusiasts prefer to be referred to, as well as makers, crafters and do-it-yourselfers. They are eager to find new ways to express themselves creatively. They are proud of what they produce and design. Some of them are actually selling their creations, rather than merely utilizing them or giving them as gifts.

There is a challenge for sewing and yarn shops, crafting and hobby stores, and others that sell the tools and supplies. It is attracting them to their stores, or making their stores appealing to these young crafters.

Traditional sewing, hobby, and crafting establishments are being disrupted by the next generation of crafts hobbyists. These businesses must evolve or perish.

Joann, a national fabric and craft company, has got it right. It just opened a next-generation concept shop near its corporate headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. It has beeing operating for 75 years of service and has around 850 stores. Its focal point is an open-air Creator’s Studio where both experienced and novice crafters come. They learn new skills, take classes, rent equipment to complete projects, and socialize with friends and fellow crafters.

Customers come in to seek inspiration, learn from team members, and share creative experiences with others. They construced a store unlike any other in the world based on market knowledge and DIY trends. It  is the most inviting and inclusive craft experience ever built.

Millennials who love craft will also love the new Joann concept store, which is equipped with a variety of high-tech/high-touch features. These include a Craft Creator touchscreen kiosk where customers can search Pinterest for new crafting projects. There is also a new Cut Bar where customers can choose their fabric and continue shopping. They are then texted that their cut fabric is ready for pick up.

Joann’s concept store will assist enterprising crafters in selling their creations by setting up installations for creatives to display their work. Craft fairs and local community activities will be able to use the Creator’s Studio as well. Embracing creativity as a tool to bring people together is more meaningful than ever before in this digital era. The concept shop makes Joann the best place to find inspiration, tools, and a method to share creativity with others.

Not all of the craft industry is so succesful in attracting new clients however. Some continue to operate as if it were the 1970s or 1980s.  Companies operating like that can’t expect to obtain the same results by doing the same things.

A typical sewing business is still tailored to older customers rather than younger clients. If they want people to come to their store they need to give them an experience worth coming for. It should be something they can post to Instagram.

Many shopkeepers are oblivious to the needs of customers under the age of 40. These stores should t hink about what people are searching for if they want them to start sewing. Many of the designs and fabric are very old fashioned.

Shops who hope to attract creative hobbyists must bring their stores into the twenty-first century. This new audience  are the youngest they’ve ever been.  Millennials, who are between the ages of 18 and 34, make up the highest group of craft enthusiasts (41 percent).  36 percent are between the ages of 35 and 54, and 23% are 55 and older.”

Craft supplies are sold in 75,000 retail outlets.

These include specialty craft stores, national craft chains, mass market discount stores, dollar stores and art supply stores. They are even in hardware and drug stores. The total market size is around $36 billion.

Brick-and-mortar shops account for over 90% of industry sales. Young and elderly makers, rookies and seasoned creators are increasingly turning to online retailers and home buying channels. Changes in consumer behavior support the need for retailers to engage their customers. This can be achieved via simultaneous strategies that combine satisfying in-store and online shopping experiences.

62 percent of U.S. families participate in at least one crafts activity.

Even more unexpected is the fact that most crafters don’t adhere to just one hobby. They tend to engage in a variety of them. Only 16 percent of crafters work on just one project, 39 percent work on two or more, and 45 percent work on five or more.

Edible arts (17%), painting and sketching (16%), youngsters crafts (16%), sewing and textiles (11%) and paper crafts (11%) are the most popular creative activities.

Millennials also share their love of craft hobbies with their children. Millennial parents engage in children’s crafts because they perceive it as a chance to bond with their children. They also understand the importance of these activities for their children’s creative development and hand to eye coordination.

Craftsing have a strong connection with millennials’ zeitgeist.

It’s a method to express oneself and a way to channel one’s creative energies. It’s also a way to engage with family and friends, and a good use of time, money, and resources.

Millennials have a strong desire to repurpose, reuse, and upcycle existing items into new, unique gems. The trend has even gained the attention of fast-fashion behemoth H&M. It has started a Take Care initiative in Hamburg and opened a new flagship on rue La Fayette in Paris. The plan is to ultimately expand the concept even further afield.

Customers can bring old clothes back to the Take Care department for guidance on refurbishing and repairs. They also offer repair kits to repair buttons and zippers.  H&M also has specialists and seamstresses on hand to offer advise, hold workshops, and provide embroidery services. Clients can then customise the clothing from the store  This is all part of the company’s sustainability drive, which caters to the company’s practical, do-it-yourself ethos.

One of the main reasons why millennials are attracted to craft and creative activities is the ability to personalize items.

This was the epiphany that led Joann to create a new concept store. Pinterest also noticed a spike in searches for DIY customised T-shirts in 2017.  To make one, you would need a serger machine, which only the most serious home sewers have. Customers can use the new Creator’s Studio in its concept shop. Not only to buy fabric and accessories and learn how to make their own T-shirts, but also to use a serger and electric cutting machines to bring their unique idea to life.

There is no time to waste for craft retailers. They must transform their shops into Instagram-worthy hangouts for the next generation of creative hobbyists.

Find out which legal structure is best for you and choose your suppliers carefully. Make a decision about where you’ll sell your products and always keep your focus on opportunities for the future.

Do you need a license to sell crafts?

In most cases, craft licenses are not necessary in all places. A license is required for businesses that are not situated in your home, for example. The best thing a small business can do is open an account registered with HMRC and begin trading that way.

How Do You Start A Home-Based Craft Business?

Be certain there is a market for your product.

You must research demand before starting a craft business.  Your product line should also be unique to differentiate yourself from others in the market.

The importance of knowing your clients needs and wants cannot be overstated.

It’s best to go with names that have a lot of brand potential for marketing purposes. You want to have an identity that people will remember.

Keep your online assets secured and get hold of the best website name you can afford.

Check to see if your selling strategy is working and attracting the audience you have targeted.

Good photographs of your products are very important. It is worth investing in a basic lighting system and brushing up on your shooting skills.

Is It Necessary To Register a Craft Business?

If you are running a business you’ll need to register for Self Assessment and declare any profits from your craft company on your tax return. In the United Kingdom, most craft enterprises are conducted by single proprietors, however some craft entrepreneurs set up limited companies as well. As a business owner, having HMRC on your side will also make things easier. As a self-employed individual, you must ensure you are responsible for paying your taxes. It’s unlikely that you’ll be allowed to work lawfully as a craftsperson without a license. If you expect to make a profit, you’ll need a business license in almost every country.

Many craft enterprises operate as sole proprietorships due to their low liability risk. Sometimes this means the business name may need to be changed, however. If you live in the US contact a state or county agency if you want your name to be registered. You should be able to find the state information you need on the where and how to register for a DBA in each state page. If you run your craft business as a sole proprietor in the US, you must pay self-employment taxes. According to US official data, there are 12 different rates. The Social Security and Medicare taxes are both 4% and 2% respectively. The Medicare tax rate is currently set at 9%. To calculate these taxes and account for them with the Internal Revenue Service, use Form 1040 SE.
